Resilient, sweetheart pup ready for a loving home!

Met Gemma our Pet of the Week and an extra special pup whose resilience will amaze you!

Gemma had entropia, an eye condition affecting dogs with extra skin on the face. The eyelids roll inward causing the eyelashes to rub painfully against the cornea. She underwent surgery and is on the road to recovery. In addition to her eye condition, Gemma had an old injury to her front leg that did not heal properly resulting in the necessary amputation of her front leg . No matter the trials she has been through, her spirit remains lively. Gemma is sweet and playful, quite the lovable pup.

The best gift you can give is unconditional love. Gemma is eager to give love and could sure use some from you, won’t you come and see her today?

Disaster Preparedness for Your Pets

For many families disaster preparedness involves stocking up on bottled water and canned goods, and storing plywood to protect windows. But what about preparing your furry family members? Without a disaster plan in place for your pets, you may be forced to evacuate to a shelter that does not accept animals. Once you leave your home, you have no way of knowing how long you’ll be kept out of the area, and you may not be able to go back for your pets.

Pets should NEVER be left behind. Frightened animals frequently slip out open doors, broken windows or damaged areas of your home. These abandoned animals face harsh elements, starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, and they could be a victim of fallen debris or traffic accidents. If you’re forced to leave your pets behind, you may be faced with a difficult family discussion when you return home. Planning and organization will ensure your pets are safe and secure throughout the stress of a natural disaster.

Be aware of local kennels that board animals during evacuations, make temporary pet care arrangements with family or friends out of the area or be familiar with pet-friendly hurricane shelters and motels throughout the region. Most shelters, kennels and hotels require current records of shots as well as identification, kennels/carriers, food/water and other provisions found in our Pet Survival Kit. Making arrangements for your four-legged family members in advance and having your pet’s survival kit ready to go will help reduce the stress of a looming storm.

Six-year old’s extra special birthday helps the SPCA animals

What six-year old would forgo toys and gifts to help animals at the SPCA? Will Corl would! In Corl family tradition, once a child reaches his or her sixth birthday he or she trades in personal presents for gifts donated to a charity. In memory of their beloved family dog Hilde, a miniature dachshund who passed away in February, Will selected the SPCA as his birthday charity.

Dog-themed invitations explained the generous gift idea and included the SPCA’s Wish List. Friends and family came to Will’s party at Picasso’s Cup Art Cafe, painted dog-themed ceramic items and loaded Will up with gifts for the SPCA animals.

Will and his mom Emily brought in an overflowing blue tub, box and bag filled with pet food, toys, litter and tons of other wish list items before spending some quality time with the four-legged friends his birthday donations are helping. Kudos to Will and the Corl family tradition of selfless acts of kindness. The SPCA staff, volunteers and animals appreciate the heartfelt generosity.

Stones vs. Rocks: the Tale of Oakley the Iguana

Dr. Carolyn Kohn, McClurg Animal Medical Center’s resident exotic veterinarian recently performed surgery on a unique patient. Beyond her classification as an exotic pet, Oakley the iguana is extra special because she has exceeded the average iguana life expectancy by 10 years. Iguana mom, Susan Sorendino brought 20 year old Oakley to see Dr. Carolyn after discovering some hard foreign objects while cleaning Oakley’s cage. The samples collected and an x-ray taken pointed towards the same diagnosis: multiple bladder stones, similar to ones dogs or cats can get.

During surgery Dr. Carolyn discovered Oakley’s bladder was clear, and the actual culprit wasn’t stones, but rocks within the iguana’s colon. Whereas stones are made of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium or a combination of the three, Oakley had actual rocks like the ones found outside. Susan had created an area of rocks around the edge of her patio to prevent Oakley from digging in the grass and soil, and possibly contracting parasites; given the size of the rocks Susan never imagined Oakley would eat them.

During surgery Dr. Carolyn only removed a few of the rocks, along with a twig that felt like hard metal, to avoid contaminating the iguana with bacteria or other substances in her intestines, which is where the rocks were located. Oakley has already began passing the rest of the rocks on her own. With antibiotics and her attentive mother, Oakley’s recovery time was minimal–just five to six days for her intestinal track to heal.
