McGruff the Crime Dog visited our booth at the All Species Pet Fete in Zephyrhills this past weekend. Looks like he’s up for the challenge, too!

The SPCA is still 1 of 46 competing in the ASPCA $100K Challenge which ends on October 31.

The goal of the Challenge is to “Save More Lives” and the SPCA is hoping to adopt more than 1150 cats and dogs before the October 31 deadline.

Currently, the SPCA has adopted 351 cats and dogs since August 1 and is set to break last month’s record of 356 adoptions.

To find more homes, the SPCA has reduced adoption fees for all cats and any dog over 30 pounds. Cat adoption fees are only $15 and that fee is reduced to $5 for cats that are over 7 years old or adopters over 60 years old. Starting September 1, any dog over 30 pounds can be adopted for only $60.

The SPCA Adoption Center is located at 5850 Brannen Road South in Lakeland and is open Monday – Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Staff can be reached at info@lovemyspca.com or call 863/646-7722.

Hi I’m Patches! I’m a lucky girl because a very nice family found me as a stray and even though they couldn’t afford to take care of me for long, they brought me into their home and shared their love (and their food!) with me. My temporary family said that I’m playful, that I love kids, and that I can be a loving lap-kitty! Won’t you come meet me today? My adoption fee is only $15 and even less at $5 if you’re over 60 years old.

Our city golf course hosted a Steak Night for the SPCA last week. Every month, the course hosts a Steak Night but this is the first time that it has turned into a “benefit” of sorts. Advanced RSVPs were taken and the course promised 15% of every dinner to be donated to the SPCA.
Things started out a bit slow for this event – as many times is the case. One week, the RSVP total was 20. A couple of weeks later the total had jumped to 40, and then we were upon the week of the event. On Tuesday of that week, our RSVPs had breached the 100 mark and by the day of the event we had to stop taking names. 200 people had turned in their RSVPs!

A member of Board of Directors and a member of the Advisory Board helped to make this event a great success and their enthusiasm didn’t waiver on the day of the dinner. They came by the SPCA and picked up information for the tables, pet pictures for each table, retail items to sell and our 100K Challenge sign to gather petition signatures. We had no idea how well this event would do!

167 ate dinner with the SPCA that night and over $900 was raised through the dinners, retail sales and money gathered at the event for donations. We are now hoping to do this event quarterly!

Facebook fan Jerry Jerome decided to shoot us some photos of him and our Challenge sign along with his three adopted cats – Fozzie, Oscar and Rufus!
