Sit. Stay. Follow. Turn. Roll over.

Therapy Dog International has certified dogs and handlers for the purpose of visitations to hospitals, nursing homes and facilities for many years. A visit from a canine has proven to elevate the mood of any facility and encourage rehabilitation whether it be physical, emotional or any other.

The SPCA’s very own Cal Arter, Board Member, is a certified Therapy Dog handler and has has coordinated Therapy Dog Testing for the SPCA over the last year. The next testing date is on April 11.

Click here to see the brochure on Testing Requirements. A nominal fee is involved with the testing.

Grass has been greener at the SPCA with all of the recent improvements, but it’s literally been greener within the fences of our Canine Visitation area.

A few months ago, Chris Powell and staff from ForeverLawn of Tampa Bay installed K9 Grass – an artifical turf specifically designed for dogs.

Before the installation, the visitation area was not the most enjoyable area for canine excercise or for canines to meet potential adopters. Large oak trees inhibit grass growth in the area and left the area filled with dirt. Visitors (canine and human) would walk away from the area a little dirtier than when they came. K9 Grass turned out to be the perfect remedy for the dirty nuisance.

After a generous donation from The Reitzel Foundation and Mr. & Mrs. DJ Shea, the funds were acquired for the K9 Grass and Owner Chris Powell brought staff over for the installation. The installation includes laying of PVC pipes which allow for the area to be irrigated to reduce unwelcome odors and inhibit bacterial growth.

As the grass became greener, staff, visitors and adoptalbe canines waited in anticipation for the final product. The dirt  in the area was leveled and graded down. Strips of wood were laid to outline the areas where the grass would be installed to act as “carpet tack strips” once the grass was laid over the area.

Then, crushed aggregate was brought into the areas which would be later sloped according to drainage points. After that, a special drainage product was installed to elevate the grass above the base to separate it from the liquids and the flow of drainage.

You should see our canines today! The area has literally gone to the dogs and they love it.  The humans love it, too, and the SPCA was even named a K9 Grass Five-Star Facility!

CHECK OUT OUR NEW SITE! Big thank you to the TMR Agency for making this happen for us.

Pets on Parade is only two weeks away, and your support has been amazing. Over $5,000 has been raised online so far which is more than 300% above what we raised last year alone. That’s astounding and all because of the hard work of our loyal supporters and friends. This total doesn’t include those of you that have donation sheets in hand to tally donations from friends, co-workers, family and even strangers!

What innovative fundraising did you do this year for Pets on Parade? The SPCA has caught wind of bake sales, Mary Kay parties, car washes and more! Thank you for planning ahead and raising all you can for our beloved friends.

You can register for the Walk at the event on April 17 or at the pre-registration on Campus on April 16. Take a look at the prizes for this year’s walk fundraisers.

As many of you know, we have also added a new event to our Pets on Parade – a 5K run. Runners can register now for only $25 or you can wait until the event but you’ll have to pay $30 then. We’ve made some great friends at FitNiche that have offered to accept registrations for the event so make sure to stop by their store in Lakeside Village if you’d like to run on April 17! FitNiche is also excited to bring their FitMobile to Pets on Parade and can do onsite fittings for shoes that fit you best! Runners will get snazzy t-shirts, a breakfast after the run, and some other goodies from our friends at Gold’s Gym and Lifestyles Family Fitness Center.

Trophies will be awarded to top runners in each age group!!! So get that workout in today so you can be at your best come April 17.

For more information, e-mail info@petsonparade.com or call 863/646-7722. See you on April 17!
